Janet Shen, one of the incredible Viz Magicians from Tableau Professional Services sent me a great "How To" guide for overriding our default settings and I couldn't wait to share it. Heck, it was a new word for me up until recently. Header Concatenation: This was a new problem for me. Reference Materials Toggle sub-navigation.Teams and Organizations Toggle sub-navigation.Occasionally it physically can't plot what I want without massively restructuring the data, so then i switch to PowerBI where I have more control, at the cost of more complexity. Most of the time Tableau is great because it's quick and easy. Personally, I use both depending on the task/dataset I have. It needs a different way of thinking, so don't expect them to be the same and you'll be fine. Tooltips in tableau are much better in that you can show additional visuals. Also, each "sheet" is like a dashboard that automatically interacts, you don't need to make a bunch of sheets first, add them to a dash and then get them interact. PowerBI has way better plotting options because of the marketplace and much easier Python/R integration. I use PowerBI to ETL data because DAX is powerful and can prep/clean the data how I need. How similar: they look similar on the surface, but you'll need to adjust your thinking of how the data are handled. Source: just led an evaluation of these and several other tools for my organization.
If you want an enterprise BI platform and already use Microsoft products in your data stack, Power BI has the edge. If you just want people to build data visualizations easily and quickly, Tableau is great. So bottom line, it depends what you’re doing. Power BI’s on-premise version has several restrictions.

If you’re not comfortable with the cloud, Tableau does have an advantage: its full functionality is available on premises.

And if you’ve got SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance, you can also share reports on-premises via the Power BI Reports Server at no additional cost.

You can try it out for free (not just a trial - the desktop version is totally free). Building a single semantic model in SSAS for use in both Power BI (for visual stuff) and SSRS (for tabular stuff) is very nice. Tableau is good but not great at simple tabular reports. There are synergies with other Microsoft products, such as MS SQL/SSAS/SSRS, Excel, SharePoint and others. Power BI is a step behind on that specific front, but is a more comprehensive enterprise BI platform. Tableau is great at data visualization, and makes it fast and easy to explore data visually.
